Achewood Commeth

Posted By Edward Salazar on December 12, 2008

I few years ago a friend of mine recommended Achewood to me. I was hesitant because a lot of internet based comic strips are terrible. I began reading with the most recent strip and I was disappointed. It was not the knee slapping funny comic strip I expected. I gave up after a few days

Then my friend said the words that most Achewood fans say to people that have not read it before “You have to start from the beginning.” I tried Achewood again. This time starting from the very first strip. When I got to eighth one everything clicked.

After that I read through the archives. I watched as the stories swerved from surreal, silly, dark and poignant. There was no guessing what would happen next in Achewood. Some strips were stand alone standard Sunday comic strips while others ballooned into strange adventures.

Honestly I feel indebted to Chris Onstad, the man behind Achewood. The strip has not just brought laughs. At times it has boiled down the suffering the modern world causes people every day into one strip. Like the timeTeodor explained Roast Beef’s depression to Philippe.

Mr. Onstad is traveling around the country promoting a book called The Great Outdoor Fight, from Dark Horse Comics. It is a bound copy of one of the more popular story arcs. His next stop is our very own Meltdown Comics. There are very few people I could be more excited to meet. There is almost no one who I respect more.

If you are a fan you will most likely be there. If you are a not a fan yet spend the next few hours reading the strip. If it affects you the way it does me you will be there in line, with a beautifully bound copy of The Great Outdoor Fight under your arm. Hope to see you there.

  1. When is the event? Does this place have an address? Can I buy the book there. Are you one of the comedy meltdown comedians? Sounds like good times!
